Deciduous Shrubs

Shrubs are the foundation of a landscape, and add structure, texture and interest without adding a lot of work. Brightly adorned with bold colors or buttoned up like boxwood, shrubs are not afraid to take up space while serving as impressive privacy hedges.

Shrubs add fragrance, beautiful color, privacy, structure, and can be a great wildlife habitat. We offer a wide selection of shrubs including both deciduous and evergreen shrubs.

  • Abelia – Mucho Gusto (Abelia x grandiflora)

    Mucho Gusto is compact, mounding flowering shrub, featuring variegated, green and white foliage with loads of tiny, white fluted flowers in summer. Grows to 2-3 1/2 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Abelia – Sweet Emotion (Abelia mosanensis)

    The hardiest Abelia on the market, Sweet Emotion can handle Zone 4 winters. This multi-season plant features fragrant white and pink spring blooms. Dark green foliage changes to a showy orange in fall. Grows to 5-6 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Barberry – Sunjoy Mini Maroon (B. thunbergii)

    A dwarf, sterile and non-invasive Barberry, featuring maroon-purple foliage and an excellent compact habit. Needs some sun to maintain foliage color. Grows to 2-3 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Barberry – Sunjoy Mini Saffron (B. thunbergii)

    This deciduous shurb is an excellent dwarf golden barberry that is sun burn resistant. The foliage has hints of orange in the new growth and orange-red fall color. Grows 1.5-2′ tall and 2′ wide. Full to part sun.

  • Beauty Bush – Jolene Jolene (Kolkwitzia amabilis)

    Jolene Jolene is a compact Beautybush, featuring star-shaped pink flowers, appearing in late spring and early summer. Flowers emerge all along the length of the branches. Grows to 4-5 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Bluebeard – Beyond Midnight (Caryopteris)

    Beyond Midnight is a small, compact plant, producing dark, glossy foliage and deep blue, late summer flowers. Attracts multitudes of bees and other pollinators. Grows to 24-30″ tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Burning Bush – Fireball Seedless (Euonymus alatus)

    An improved selection of Compact Burning Bush with improved hardiness and producing no seeds, so non-invasive. Features outstanding bright red fall foliage, with more sun producing better fall color. Compact plants grow to 5-7 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Butterfly Bush – Chrysalis Tricolor Dwarf (Buddleia hybrid)

    This exciting dwarf Butterfly Bush produces 3 different flower colors on one plant. PInk, blue and white flowers appear in summer attracting butterflies galore. Grows to less than 1/2 the size of standard varieties, reaching 2 1/2 to 3 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Butterfly Bush – Miss Molly (Buddleia)

    This excellent non-invasive variety features the closest to red of any Butterfly Bush on the market. Large maroon-red blooms appear in late spring and repeat blooming all summer long. A butterfly and pollinator magnet. A compact plant, growing to 4-5 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Butterfly Bush – Pugster Sorbet Dwarf (Buddleia hybrid)

  • Cherry Bush – Easy as Pie (Prunus hybrid)

    Easy as Pie Bush Cherry is a compact growing shrub, featuring showy white spring flowers, followed by showy tart, berries or cherries. Fruit are great for baking, preserves or fresh eating. Grows to 4-5 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Coralberry – Candy (Symphoricarpos x doorenbosii)

    Candy Coralberry is a compact, deciduous shrub, featuring blue-green summer foliage and small pink, mid-summer flowers. The flowers result in loads of dense clusters of glossy, candy-pink berries that persist all winter long. Grows to around 2 1/2 -3 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Cotoneaster – Tom Thumb (Cotoneaster apiculatus)

    Tom thumb is a low, dense mounding, deciduous shrub with glossy-green summer foliage that turns bright red in fall. Small white spring flowers result in red berries in late summer and fall. Grows to around 18″ tall and 3-4 ft. wide. Full to part sun.

  • Crapemyrtle – Red (Lagerstroemia indica)

    A deep red flowering Crapemyrtle, with abundant late summer flowers extending into fall. Can grow to 6-8 ft. wide, but may die back to the ground in our more severe winters. Full to part sun.

  • Deutzia – Nikko (Deutzia gracilis ‘Nikko’)

    A low, wide spreading, deciduous shrub, with spectacular white, spring flowers. Green summer foliage turns to burgandy in fall. Grows 6-12″ per year, reaching 2′ tall and 5′ wide. Part to full sun.

  • Deutzia – Yuki Cherry Blossom (Deutzia gracilis)

    An excellent, low-growing, deciduous shrub with spectacular cream-colored flowers blushed with magenta markings. Abundant flowers in spring and early summer. Burgandy fall foliage. Grows to 18-24″ tall & wide. Full to part sun.

  • Diervilla – Cool Splash (Diervilla)

    Also known as Bush Honeysuckle, Cool Splash features variegated, green leaves with bright white edges. Yellow blossoms in bunches appear in June and July. Densely branched plants grow to around 3-4 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Diervilla – Honeybee (Diervilla)

    Honeybee Diervilla, also known as Bush Honeysuckle, is a compact, small bush, featuring brilliant, chartreuse-gold foliage and clusters of of small, tubular yellow flowers. Blooms appear in summer and attract butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators. Grows to around 3 ft tall and 3 1/2 ft wide. Full to part sun.

  • Diervilla – Kodiac Jet Black (Diervilla hybrid)

    This tough, drought and deer resistant shrub produces deep purple-black foliage that really intensifies in the fall. Yellow summer flowers. Grows to 3-4 ft. tall and wide. Thrives in sun or shade, including dry shade.

  • Dogwood – Arctic Fire Red Twig (Cornus)

    An outstanding selection of Red Twig Dogwood, but with a much more compact habit. Great for winter interest is smaller areas. Grows to 3-5 ft. tall and wide. Sun or shade.

  • Elderberry – Black Lace (Sambucus nigra)

    Pink flowers in summer contrast nicely with the purple-black, lacy foliage that is similar to Japanese Maples. Deer resistant. Grows to 6-10 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Elderberry – Lemony Lace (Sambucus nigra)

    Lemony Lace produces finely dissected, gold foliage in spring that ages to chartreuse in summer. Clusters of white flowers appear in summer, followed by bright red berries (not edible) in fall. Deer resistant. Grows to 5-7 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Euonymus – Manhattan (Euonymus kiautschovicus)

    A very nice, broad-leaf evergreen shrub. Manhattan has glossy, round, dark green leaves year round. Can grow to 6 ft. tall and wide, but can be maintained with trimming in tha 3-4 ft. range. Sun or shade.

  • False Spirea – Mr. Mustard (Sorbaria)

    This unique deciduous shrub boasts bright and long lasting colorful springtime foliage that yields an array of yellow, orange, red and pink hues. White flowers appear in summer. Grows 2-3′ tall and 3-4′ wide. Full to part sun.

  • Fig – Brown Turkey (Ficus carica ‘Brown Turkey’)

    Brown Turkey is a zone 7 Fig, making it NOT winter hardy in our area if grown in the ground. However, many people grow it in a large pot and move into the garage in winter and out in the spring after the danger of frost has passed. The reward for this effort is a small ornamental tree the poduces loads of sweet, brownish-purple figs with pinkish-red flesh. Full to part sun.

  • Forsythia – Show Off Starlet (Forsythia)

    This dwarf deciduous shrub delivers a bright ball of yellow flowers in spring. Flowers are produced from the base of the plant to the tips of the branches. Grows 3 ft. tall and 4 ft. wide. Full to part sun.

  • Gooseberry – Little Ben (Ribes uve-crispa)

    Little Ben is a dwarf, compact Gooseberry, producing sweet, tart red berries in mid to late summer. Branches are stiff and thorny. Grows to around 2-3 ft tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Honeysuckle Vine – Kintzley’s Ghost (Lonicera reticulata)

    This excellent Honeysuckle vine produces unusual summer flower buds that look like saucers and resemble Eucalyptus leaves. The yellow flowers attract Hummingbirds and eventually turn into red berries in fall. Non invasive, but growing up to 12 ft. on a trellis. Full to part sun.

  • Hydrangea – Berry White (Hydrangea paniculata)

    Berry White is an upright growing, deciduous shrub, known for its large, cone-shaped flowers that emerge pure white in summer, and slowly change to dark pink, starting from the bottom of the flower up. Grows to 6-7 ft.tall and 4-5 ft. wide. Full to part sun.

  • Hydrangea – Eclipse (Hydrangea macrophylla)

    Eclipse is the first true dark-leaf mophead Hydrangea. Dark purple leaves hold their color all season long, making an excellent contrast with cranberry-colored, round, mophead flowers. Blooms appear in late spring and early summer. Grows to around 3-5 ft. tall and wide. Morning sun only! Afternoon shade is a must. Direct sun will cause leaves to wilt and burn.

  • Hydrangea – FlowerFull Smooth (Hydrangea arborescens)

    FlowerFull is an improved Annabelle type Hydrangea, producing 2-3 times more creamy-white, mophead (round) flowers. Blooms appear in early summer and persist into fall. FlowerFull features much stronger, upright stems that resist flopping in wind and rain. Grows to around 3-4 ft tall and wide. Part shade, prefering morning sun and afternoon shade.

  • Hydrangea – Incrediball Storm Proof Smooth (Hydrangea arborescens)

    This excellent Annabelle type Hydrangea produces loads of round, white flowers in summer. Branches are incredibly sturdy, able to hold the large flowers upright, even during rainstorms. No floppy blooms. Grows in a round, dense habit, reaching 3-4 ft. tall and wide. Full to part shade.

  • Hydrangea – Limelight Prime (Hydrangea paniculata)

    A more refined and compact version of the famous Limelight Hydrangea. Produces stronger stems and a more compact habit. Summer flowers emerge lime colored, changing to white. Grows to 4-6 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Hydrangea – Little Lime Punch (Hydrangea paniculata)

    Excellent compact Hydrangea, producing flowers ranging in color from lime to white to pink to Hawaiian Punch red! As it reblooms throughout summer, you will see all these colors at once. Grows to 3-5 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Hydrangea – Powerball (Hydrangea paniculata)

    Powerball is an excellent mid sized shrub, featuring loads of large, nearly round blooms in summer and into fall. Blooms begin a line green, changing to white and maturing to soft pinks in fall. Grows to 4-6 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Hydrangea – Puffer Fish (Hydrangea paniculata)

    An excellent compact flowering shrub, producing loads of puffy white, cone shaped flowers in summer. The blooms engulf the entire plant, nearly obscuring the foliage. Grows to 3-5 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Hydrangea – Strawberry Sundae (Hydrangea paniculata)

    Strawberry Sundae is an excellent, award-winning Hydrangea, featuring loads of large, cone-shaped creamy-white summer flowers that change to pink and then to red. Usually all three flower colors are present at the same time. Grows in a compact habit, reaching 4-5 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Hydrangea – Vanilla Strawberry (Hydrangea paniculata)

    Vanilla Strawberry is a large Hydrangea producing loads of cone-shaped, creamy white summer flowers that change to pink and then to red. Usually all three flower colors are present at the same time. Grows quickly to 6-8 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Hydrangea (Reblooming) – Let’s Dance Sky View (Hydrangea macrophylla)

    Sky View has the ability to retain old wood buds during cold winters and also create new flower buds in spring. Round mophead flowers appear in late spring, and are a beautiful sky blue or pink, depending on soil pH. Reblooms in late summer and into fall. Grows to 2-3 ft. tall and wide. Full to part shade.

  • Jetbead – Black (Rhodotypos scandens)

    Simple, but angelic pure white flowers adorn this deciduous shrub in June. Glossy black, bead-like fruit remain attractive throughout winter. Grows 1′ per year, reaching 3′-6′ tall and wide. Full sun to full shade.

  • Lilac – New Age Lavender (Syringa vulgaris)

    Excellent compact Lilac, growing to about half the size of a common Lilac. Attractive clean, disease resistant foliage. Produces fragrant, sweet smelling lavender flowers in spring. Grows to 5-6 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Lilac – New Age White (Syringa vulgaris)

    Excellent compact Lilac, growing to only half the size of a common Lilac. Clean attractive foliage, resistant to disease. Produces fragrant, sweet smelling white flowers in spring. Grows to 5-6 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Lilac – Virtual Violet (Syringa ‘Bailbridget’)

    Virtual Violet is an excellent large Lilac, producing shiny green, disease free, foliage. Raspberry-purple flower buds appear in spring, opening to fragrant violet flowers. Grows in an upright, dense habit, reaching 6-8 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Ninebark – Tiny Wine (Physocarpos opulifolius)

    Probably the most dwarf Ninebark on the market. Very compact and bushy, with small, refined, dark bronze-maroon leaves. Foliage offers great contrast with white flowers in late spring. Grows to only 3-4′ tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Pearlbush – Lotus Moon (Exochorda x macrantha)

    Lotus Moon is a compact, mounded shrub, and a profuse spring bloomer that is covered with white flowers, usually in April and May. Compact plants grow to around 4-5 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Privet – Golden Vicary (Ligustrum x vicary)

    A colorful deciduous shrub, with golden yellow foliage, with the color lasting throughout the summer. Good for hedges and adding color to the landscape. Grows 1′ per year, reaching 4-6′ tall and wide. Full sun for best color.

  • Raspberry – Red Latham (Rubus occidentalis)

    This shrub provides extra-large, rich red, firm berries with sweet delicious fruit. Very hardy and disease resistant. Raspberries have a strong flavor which makes them excellent for jelly and jam. Grows 48”. Full sun.

  • Rose of Sharon – Blue Chiffon (Hibiscus syriacus)

    Blue Chiffon is an excellent, upright growing shrub, featuring double summer flowers, with a shocking blue color. Each flower has a lacy center, creating an anemone-like bloom. Grows to 8-12 ft. tall and 6-10 ft. wide. Full to part sun.

  • Rose of Sharon – Blue Satin (Hibiscus syriacus)

    Absolutely the best blue Hibiscus. Blue Satin is a deciduous strong growing, uniform variety with rich color. Unusual blue flowers add a tropical touch to any landscape. Deer resistant. Ht.: 8 – 12′ x 5′. Full to Part Sun.

  • Rose of Sharon – Pollypetite (Hibiscus Syriacus)

    A delightfully unusual and beautiful dwarf Rose of Sharon. The ball-shaped shrub has large, rounded, pure lavender-purple flowers with soft ruffled edges and no center eye. Grows 3-4′ tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Rose of Sharon – Red Heart (Hibiscus syriacus)

    Red Heart is an upright growing, large shrub featuring an abundance of beautiful pure white flowers with red centers. Bloom time is mid summer and into fall. Grows to around 8-10 ft. tall and 6-8 ft. wide. Full to part sun.

  • Rose of Sharon – Starblast Chiffon (Hibiscus syriacus)

    Starblast Chiffon is an excellent, long blooming shrub, featuring brilliant white summer flowers, with fully double, hot pink starburst centers. Grows in an upright, vase-shaped habit, reaching 8-12 ft. tall and 5-8 ft. wide. Full to part sun.

  • Scotch Broom – Sister Redhead (Cytisus scoparius)

    This very unusual shrub features tiny green leaves on wiry green stems for a unique textural effect in the garden. True red, pea-shaped flowers cover the plant in spring. Thrives in the heat and loves dryer conditions, once established. Grows to 3-4 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Spirea – Bridal Wreath (Spiraea x vanhouttei)

    Also known as Vanhoutte Spirea, an old-fashioned deciduous shrub with fountain like branches and a vase shaped habit. White flowers line the cascading branches in spring for a very distinctive look. Grows 1-2′ per year, reaching 6-8′ tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Spirea – Candy Corn (Spirea hybrid)

    This colorful new, compact Spirea produces apple-red new foliage that changes to pineapple yellow, for an excellent contrast. On top of that, purple-red blooms appear in late spring. Grows to 2-3 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Summersweet – Ruby Spice (Clethra alnifolia)

    This Plant of Merit deciduous shrub features deep reddish-pink flowers that don’t fade. Blooms mid-summer and has a nice yellow fall color. Grows 1′ per year, reaching 4′ – 5′ tall and 3′ – 5′ wide. Full to part sun.

  • Sweet Box – Sweet & Lo (Sarcococca hookeriana)

    Sweet & Lo Sweet Box is a small evergreen shrub, producing shiny foliage and two-toned hot pink and white, jasmine-like fragrant flowers in early spring. With it’s attractive evergreen foliage, Sweet Box makes a great year round addition to the shade garden. Grows to around 3 ft. tall and wide Full to part shade.

  • Sweetspire – Fizzy Mizzy (Itea)

    A compact growing shrub, producing unusual upright shooting, white, early summer flowers. Grows in a neat and tidy habit to around 2-3 ft. tall and wide. Sun or shade.

  • Sweetspire – Little Henry (Itea virg.)

    A more compact and smaller version of Henry’s Garnet Sweetspire. Deciduous, white spring flowers, and reddish-purple fall foliage. Grows 6-8″ per year,reaching 2-3′ tall and wide. Can grow in wet conditions. Shade to full sun.

  • Viburnum – Brandywine (Viburnum)

    Brandywine is an excellent, multi-season flowering shrub, producing showy white flowers in late spring. The best features are the fall pink and blue berries and shiny dark green foliage that turns to maroon-red in fall. Produces more berries if paired with Winterthur Viburnum. Grows to 6 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Viburnum – Popcorn Japanese Snowball (Viburnum plicatum)

    Popcorn Japanese Snowball Viburnum features loads of rounded, popcorn-like clusters of white snowball flowers up to 3″ in diameter in mid to late spring. Dark green, strongly veined foliage turns shades of burgandy and red in fall. Grows in a dense upright habit to around 6-8 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Viburnum – Shasta (Viburnum pl. tom. ‘Shasta’)

    A large deciduous shrub, with excellent white flowers in spring. The 4-6″ diameter white flowers line the horizontal branches of this specimen plant, followed by bright red fruits that change to black in fall. Fall foliage on this form of Doublefil Viburnum is orange to russet-red. Grows 1-2′ per year, reaching 6′ tall and 10′ wide. Part shade to full sun.

  • Weigela – Midnight Sun Dwarf (Weigela florida)

    An extremely dwarf and compact Weigela, producing glossy, blazing orange and red summer to autumn foliage. Produces a light crop of pink flowers in spring. Grows to only 18″ tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Weigela – Rainbow Sensation (Weigela florida)

    Rainbow Sensation produces attractive, variegated, green and creamy yellow foliage. Dense clusters of soft pink flowers appear in May and June. Grows in a compact habit, reaching 3-4 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Weigela – Spilled Wine (Weigela florida)

    A semi-dwarf deciduous shrub with attractive reddish-burgundy foliage, and rose-pink spring flowers. Larger than Midnight Wine, but smaller than Wine & Roses. Grows 2 ft. tall and 3 ft.wide. Full sun.

  • Weigela – Vinho Verde (Weigela florida)

    A very unusual Weigela, producing lime green leaves edged in black. A light crop of red-pink flowers are produced in spring, but this plant is all about the foliage. Grows to 3-5 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Winterberry – Winter Red (female) (Ilex verticillata)

    This deciduous holly produces vivid dark red berries in fall that last into winter. A female variety, Winter Red requires Southern Gentleman as a pollinator for berry production. Grows 6′-8′ tall and wide. Full to part sun.
