Perennials

Perennial flowers come back year after year, and bring seasonal color to your garden. They add fragrance, and attract pollinators such as butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.

Most perennials bloom for 2 to 3 months, with a few long season bloomers available.  In addition to offering a diverse array of color and texture, perennials also add structure with their foliage and growth habits. Perennials are a key component of every landscape, and also work really well in containers.

  • – Red Birds in a Tree (Scrophularia)

    An interesting perennial, with oddly shaped red flowers on long wands. Blooms off and on from midspring to fall. Attracts hummingbirds. Grows to 24-28″ tall. Full to part sun.

  • – Tufted Hairgrass (Deschampsia cespitosa)

    Tufted Hairgrass is highly ornamental, producing fine hair-like flower plumes in summer, rising 2-3 ft. above the clumps of green foliage. Golden foliage in fall. The clumps grow to around 16″ tall. Grows well in moderately shady conditions.

  • Agastache – Beelicious Pink (Agastache hybrid)

    Beelicious Pink is a tidy, rounded and mounded perennial plant that produces delicate light pink flower spikes through most of the summer. A pollinator magnet. Zone 6 perennial. Grows to 32″ tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Agastache – Blue Boa (Agastache)

    Blue Boa features long-blooming, deep violet clusters of flowers on showy 5″ spikes. Hummingbird magnet. Grows to around 24″ tall and wide. Full to part sun.

    This edible perennial Chive features green, grass-like foliage, 1 inch lavender-purple, summer flowers with a purple stripe down the middle of the petal. Grows to about 1 ft. tall. Full to part sun.

    This native perennial is part of the mint family, featuring an upright, clump forming habit. Lavender to purple flower spikes appear in summer. A hummingbird magnet. Grows to 2-4 ft. tall and wide. Full to part sun.

  • Aralia – Sun King (Aralia cordata)

    Also known as Golden Japanese Spikenard, this new cultivar has a tropical look, with it’s bright foliage brightening any shade garden. Tiny white flowers in summer give way to purple-black berries in fall. Grows 3 ft. tall and wide. Full to part shade.

  • Archangel – Jade Frost (Lamiastrum galeobdolon)

    Excellent for a shaded border or rock garden, this perennial blooms in late spring with yellow flowers. Known for colorful leaves that are deep green with heavy silver mottling. Use as a perennnial groundcover or in planters as a spiller. Grows to 10″ tall and spreads. Full to part shade.

  • Artemesia – Silver Lining (Artemesia hybrid)

    Silver Lining is a foliage perennial, featuring dissected silver leaves and a mounded, low wide habit, maintaining perfect form all season. Yellow flowers appear in summer but this plant is known for its foliage. Grows to around 16″ tall and 36″ wide. Full to part sun.

  • Aster – Kickin Carmine Red (Aster)

  • Avens – Pumpkin Orange (Geum coccineum)

    This Geum is a vibrant perennial known for its striking, double, ruffled orange flowers that add a lively touch to gardens. Bloom time is spring. Grows 16-20″ tall and 12″ wide. Full to part sun.

  • Banana – Ever Red Hardy (Musa sikkimensis)

    Ever Red is a winter hardy Banana plant, featuring huge, breathtaking, striped green and maroon-red leaves. Very ornamental and tropical. Can be grown in the ground or large containers, but will survive our winters much better in the ground with several inches of mulch applied before winter. Will not produce bananas in our area.   • Canna – Pretoria (Canna)

    Canna Pretoria, also known as the Bengal Tiger canna, is a tropical plant with large orange flowers and greens leaves with yellow stripes. Grows 4-6 ft tall and 1-3 ft wide. Full to part sun.

  • Cardinal Flower – Native (Lobelia cardinalis)

    This lovely native perennial produces tall, upright spikes of true fire red, in late spring and summer. It can grow on any site, but thrives in moist to wet areas. Grows to 3-4 ft. tall. Full to part sun.

  • Catchfly – Native Royal (Silene regia)

    This native North America perennial features tiny purple flowers in dense, cone-like heads over green foliage. A summer bloomer. An important nitrogen fixing perennial for the prairie. Grows to 2-3 ft. tall and 1-2 ft. wide. Full to part sun.

  • Coco Mint 4 Luck – Trifolium (Trifolium hybrid)
